How Meditation Changed My Life

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. The past few months have been what I would refer to as a transition period. I’m still in transition. Transitioning from who I was, who I am, and who I want to be. I ended up taking time away from my job so that I could begin working on my mental health; to gain control over aspects of my life that were threatening my very existence.  My experiences have included psychotherapy, group therapy, prescribed medication etc. I am not ashamed to admit that like many others, I sometimes need help. Occasionally, I have bouts of extreme anxiety and at one point was clinically diagnosed as depressed.

I did have a breakthrough, however. Through meditation, I was able to see things more clearly. I have been able to analyze and discern my thoughts, feelings, and actions more clearly, and I’ve even been able to notice synchronicities in my life. Events that I would have shrugged off as mere coincidences in the past. I’ve also been able to calm myself down more easily during times of high stress or anxiety.

My first experience meditating was with one of my fraternity brothers.  His name is Kevin Koh and he is a Certified Reiki Instructor. In our session, he performed what is called an energy alignment. The process is also sometimes referred to as energy healing. During the session, I laid on a massage table. The light in the room was dim, meditation music was playing, and incense was burning. All of these aspects helped me to relax into a state where my mind did not wander.

Kevin then placed his hands above my chakras (energy vortexes in the body) and gently pressed on the pressure points (similar to acupuncture) and then raised his hands above them. By doing this, he activated self-healing within me. He started with the root chakra, and went through the line (sacral chakra, solar plexus chakra, heart chakra, throat chakra, third eye chakra, and crown chakra). Each chakra is represented by different characteristics.  For instance, Your third eye, which is probably the most well-known in western culture, is associated with intuition. And your heart chakra is associated with love etc. (See chart below for further reference).

As he went through the different chakras, he asked me questions that I had either never spoken about or there was no way that he could have known this information. He asked about my upbringing, whether or not I had been hurt by someone in the past that left me with extreme pain, what types of relationships I desired, what my biggest insecurities and character flaws were.  All of the scenarios that he asked about were true. When I asked him how he was able to ask about those specific things , he told me that he could sense or feel them.

Another interesting part of the session was while I was meditating; I could actually feel energy rushing through my body and I could see certain colors, (my eyes were closed) depending upon which area he was helping me to heal. Ironically, the colors that I noted when he was using the energy alignment techniques were the exact colors of the chakras that coincide with those areas.

That experience was eye-opening in more ways than one and I became a believer in the power of meditation and the power that human beings possess inside of ourselves. I have come to know to that we as humans are extremely powerful beings who have the power to manipulate the world around us with our minds. However, in order to do so you must be able to take a good look within yourself.

Since that first session, I began meditating regularly, not necessarily everyday, but definitely weekly. Through meditation, I have not only been able to realize how I can visualize things that I want or don’t want to happen, but I am also able to come to peace with the universe and myself. I am much happier, my peace and health are a priority, and I see the world in a different way now that I am able to simply sit quietly and embrace stillness of the mind. Until next time, I’m out.

  1. I can relate to this experience. I restarted my meditation practise some weeks ago and the changes on how I respond are noticeable. Recovery is a one day at a time kind of process… and once we open up our energy channels and see how energy flows through our body, we can never go back 🙂 sending you much love and peace, keep prioritizing yourself, you’re doing a wonderful job ❤
